| @ Andrew, I don't know about the stats for discretionary vs. non-discretionary private car use London-wide but every weekday over the past few weeks I have ridden past the queues in Chiswick in late afternoon/evening and it looks to me like a very significant proportion of the drivers on SCR are solitary commuters in expensive vehicles driving home from office jobs in places like Chiswick Business Park and beyond. At the weekends I see my neighbours driving their cars to and fro Chiswick High Road and stuck in the same jams. These are a lot of able-bodied people who could and probably will make lifestyle changes when they realise that these queues are not going away for three years. @ Jennifer, good for you to live such an active lifestyle. I hope I can say the same when I am retired and in more advanced years. I certainly wouldn't be choosing incarceration or euthanasia for you or future me. Like I said, if more people who can make the change do then there should be more space for people like you who are dependent on cars and buses. I'm just a local trying to suggest sensible ways of improving a difficult situation. Hopefully others will wade in with other ideas for people like Jennifer. It would be nice to hear some ideas from our Councillors. How do we improve the lives of the residents of Chiswick in the next three years while Hammersmith Bridge is only open to pedestrians and cyclists? |
