| Road pricing is inevitable. When driverless cars arrive on the scene, be that in 4 years time or 14 years time, people will start getting cars into London a lot more as they won't have to pay £20 to park. They will be able to get a driverless taxi from someone like Uber that will be half the price that an Uber is now. There will be no driver to pay, which is the biggest expense with a taxi. There will also be big savings on fuel as it will be electric and have lower energy costs. This will lead to a big increase in the number of cars on the road and gridlock. While it's inevitable in the long term, I can't see it being in Khan's manifesto for the next mayoral election as it would cost him too many votes. As I've said in other threads, once driverless cars are here, it will also make the roads a lot less threatening for cyclists. They will give enough room when overtaking (when not gridlocked), and they will be paying attention as they won't be looking at a phone will driving. |
