| It is quite puzzling why pollution doesn't seem to have increased on Putney High Street during the closure. We can all agree that more motor vehicles should mean more pollution and Putney is indisputably suffering from a high volume of diverted traffic. The only explanation that I can put forward is that the anomaly is down to the high proportion of hybrid buses operating on this road. Putney is already a low emission bus zone as Chiswick is set to be so hybrids have generally replaced diesel only in this area. Hybrids run on clean electric power under 10mph with the diesel engine only kicking in over that speed. The jams mean that the buses are never getting over 10mph do the emissions from them have been cut significantly. |
