| Al, I think you are hugely underestimating the time before driverless cars will be viable, certainly in urban environments. (There aren’t even consistently reliable self check-outs in supermarkets despite them being around for decades) There would only be advantages if almost all cars are driverless and the replacement cycles for modern cars are long. The U.K. government isn’t going to ban sales of new petrol and diesel cars until 2032 and there are pretty good alternatives available now. This isn’t the case for driverless. So when do sales of human controlled cars get banned? 2050? 2060? I don’t think I’ll worry about it... Then there are unforeseen consequences. Dealing with people on bikes may be too difficult for driverless cars initially so expect calls for more separated cycle lanes, not less, to make life easier for the car manufacturers new toys. After all, it was the car manufacturers who lobbied to bring in jay walking laws in the US as pedestrians kept getting in the way. |
