I've also observed that the centre of Chiswick can alternate between being completely snarled to being surprisingly free of traffic. What seems likely is that traffic management is becoming more sophisticated. There are a number of pinch points in the central section of Chiswick High Road. With the Queen having famously become stuck on here and emergency services vehicles also having problems, the strategy now appears to be to keep this clear. On most days traffic queues are observable back from the lights east bound at Acton Lane and west bound at Chiswick Lane so they appear to be throttling traffic into the central section. This makes the centre of Chiswick appear to be relatively traffic free. However, if the queues reach a certain point either back to Chiswick Roundabout or back to Hammersmith Broadway, it looks like they are able to change the phases. This then releases the queueing traffic into the main shopping area and this could be what Francis and others are observing. It isn't that there are more vehicles but that the management leads to bunching. So, contradictory as it may seem, we have fewer vehicles on the High Road because they are being discouraged from going this way due to the throttling at both ends, generally freer flowing traffic in the central section but an increase in the number of occasions it is gridlocked. |
