Tom, there may have been fewer vehicle movements since the changes on Chiswick High Road but clearly there is not less traffic as congestion seems to be much more prevalent than it used to be which is bound to happen if you reduce the capacity of a road. I haven't used the central car park in Chiswick since my children were small which is now decades ago and it always used to be touch and go if you would get a space. My observation is that it is now rarely full as you say but, as previously mentioned, that probably has more to do with it now having a single access point which someone unfamiliar with the area will be unlikely to find. This is a view which seems to be a consensus among local business owners. Once again, it must be stressed that people whose livelihoods depend on understanding the needs of their customers will have a better feel for the impact of reduced parking space on their takings than you do. 'Research' that has pointed to revenue from customers who drive being over stated seems largely to have been commissioned by councils seeking to build on car parks or put fees up. In practice, some businesses will not be affected by parking availability while for others it will have a direct and noticeable impact on their bottom line. |
