Perhaps Paul you should chat to some of the business owners in the area before getting behind this proposal. I only know the opinions of a small proportion but those are adamant that a food market would have a very negative impact on their takings. Weekends are when they generally are able to trade profitably an so a dip in trade on just one Sunday can make a big difference to the bottom line in these really difficult times. With all due respect to your Human Geography GCSE, most of us are going to assume that people who work in the hospitality industry, have managed to thrive in an incredibly challenging environment and whose livelihood depends on knowing their business, will have a better grasp of how the food market would affect trade than you. I fully accept that increased footfall from the other markets could potentially boost trades and many restaurant and cafe owners don't dispute that. However, even you must recognise that it is very silly to suggest that people coming to a food market are then going to spend money at local cafes and restaurants. |
