The original footfall data was published by TfL in the response to the first C9 consultation in 2019. We’ve subsequently had pedestrian counts released by TfL that cover much of 2021 and 2022. There have been, maybe surprisingly to some, no huge changes in average footfall. It fell back by 9% between 2019 and 2021, but then increased by 12% in 2022, so was slightly up on preCOVID levels. That’s for the average peak hour of footfall to directly compare with the original data. There’s not been much change in the Tuesday and Saturday counts between 2019 and 2022 (less than 5% difference), though Sunday is up by more than 20%. Sunday footfall is also noticeably up on market days and is catching up on Saturday which still has the peak footfall. It would therefore appear that footfall has bounced back to preCOVID levels with an extra boost from the markets. I’ve no data on the actual rents, but Jeremy Day, who runs commercial lettings for Whitman’s and therefore should have an informed opinion, commented earlier this year: “there is strong demand for any shop available to let, and there are a wide-range of interesting occupiers who are seeking to open in Chiswick.” |
