| I'm going to have to concede that you are right and the statement that these designs would significantly boost junction capacity isn't strictly correct. Any improvement to flow is going to be quite marginal possibly even as little as 10% However that doesn't mean the impact is insignificant. Let's just assume that current junction capacity westbound is 200 vehicles per green light phase. These changes would mean that 20 fewer cars per phase would remain stuck in queues back to Earls Court when capacity was reached. If the number of vehicles arriving at the junction per phase at peak rush hour was 260, this would cut tailbacks by a third and if it was 220 it would eradicate them altogether. Given the way traffic light phasing is altered to smooth the flow of the A4 this would just have benefits in the immediate vicinity but across west London. |
