| Although improved public transport could make a significant difference, the time scales for introduction, given that nothing material in this part of London has been approved, could be at least a decade. There are already ongoing issues on the A4 with consistent tailbacks to Earls Court westbound and Junction 1 of the M4 (Chiswick Roundabout) eastbound. When these become particularly acute, the timings on lights at the junction with the A316 seem to be adjusted leading to tailbacks down past Edensor Road. We seem to be getting some respite at the moment due to the summer holidays but this was noticeably bad during June. Clarifying the lane to use to turn into the A316 westbound on the A4 will improve throughput at this junction and reduce the risk of collisions. However, this could also have been achieved with a tin of paint to remove indications that drivers should use the left lane when approaching the roundabout from the east with the intention of staying on the A4. The fourth lane will provide a further boost to capacity with three lanes all moving directly forward or right which will remove a partial pinch point at this junction. This should help reduce queues tailing back into central London. |
