| You need to have a look at the designs again. At the moment there is ambiguity about which lane you should be in. Some drivers going straight on westbound stay in the left lane, some intending to turn into the A316 are in the middle lane (often having enter the roundabout from the north or looping around to get to Grove Park avoiding the restrictions). This confused flow causes collisions although, given the speeds at which people are travelling, they tend to not involve serious injury. A tin of paint could be used to change the road markings and discourage people going straight on westbound from using the left lane of the A4 or people using the middle lane if they are heading from the A316. This would reduce collision risk but it would effectively reduce the westbound flow to two lanes and maybe down to one if traffic turning right backs on to the third lane. That is probably why TfL felt the need to introduce the fourth lane. This guarantees at least two and normally three lanes westbound which should improve traffic flow significantly. |
