If I tolerate my neighbours' noisy parties, it doesn't mean I respect them, it just means I don't report them to the council. If I tolerate dog owners letting their dogs crap outside my house, it doesn't mean I respect them, it means I don't take action. Tolerance is putting up with something. I tolerate the activities and views of religious people, and I respect many of them as individuals, but I have no respect for their beliefs - how could I when I think they are profoundly mistaken, and in some cases, harmful? Respect has to be earned. Roland displays little respect for me, so I feel he deserves little respect in return. |
