Excellent point Sean - sadly some of my colleagues who practice a faith of some sort are among the least tolerant people I know and use that faith to justify their intolerance. However, I have to admit that I also have friends who practice a religion and are among the most tolerant people I know. Personally, whilst I feel very uncomfortable at seeing prayer meetings taking place in coffee shops, schools etc (can't help it I'm afraid however bizarre others think it is), I'm certainly not calling for such meetings to be banned - indeed if it's enabling Brandlehow School to provide a better education for children that can only be a good thing (providing that the two remain separate). In the spirit of tolerance I'll try not to see prayer meetings in coffee shops as breeding grounds for fundamentalism but in return as well as expecting to see evangelical churches welcoming gay and lesbian groups hope that the next application from a bar or club for a late-night licence won't be greeted with the usual comments identifying such places as dens of debauchery which will lead to under 35s terrorising the street of Putney! |
