Roland, I was being ironic. I wasn't suggesting I ever had extreme political views: actually I never did. I certainly didn't suggest that mortgages and spiritual lives were mutually exclusive. But I did see lots of my contemporaries spending their teenage years seemingly fixated by religion, Marxism, Trotskyism, anarchism or some other political creed. These days they seem to be perfectly normal citizens: married, with kids, a car and a dog usually - and a mortgage probably. The fervent beliefs of youth have usually evolved into something more - well - practicable. Realistic, if you wish. That's what I meant when I said they'd grow out of it. |
