Alan don't spoil your excellent argument by stating that we all think some Irish people are ignorant and superstituous! They are no more so than anyone else. You are right in stating that British policy has been appalling with regard to Ireland and the Middle East (mostly dating since the First World War). There is always a lot of work being done 'behind the scenes' to move conflict forward - but nationalism and religion have often gone hand in hand and it is hopefully those people with moderate voices who win in the end. We all hope that peace is longstanding in Northern Ireland. While you may be right about the issue of religion with regard to the Irish situation and even to a lesser extent between Israel and Palestine ... What about the training camps and schools throughout the middle east and further afield where Muslims teach young kids to hate other religions? Many of us believe in tolerance but how do we convince hard-liners? Ideological extremism is what powerful people use to get what they want, whether it's Christian fundamentalism or non-religious orthodoxy such as Communism or Fascism. |
