Alan, I have visited both Northern Ireland and the Republic. We all deeply hope that the new agreement will lead to peace. I was employed at one point to try to dissuade Americans from supporting "Noraid" a cover for supporting the IRA. Our line was that this was not a religious war but a political one. There was a lot of truth in this, but sadly not the whole truth. How come that virtually only Catholics support Sinn Fein and virtually only Protestants support the Unionists? Historically there has been religious prejudice in both South and North, with some support from authorities in both faiths. In Eire it ended some time ago. We believe this may be ending in the North at last. As far as other religious wars are concerned, it is sadly a fact that extremist believers all over the world and throughout history have resorted to violence quite often. |
