Alan and Lucille, I feel this exchange is just going round and round. As I said in my earlier comment few people disagree that the quarrel in Ireland was largely political. But sadly that does not mean that religious extremism has not played its part. Slightly changing the subject, I agree that British history in Ireland is sad. But we all have to remember that in the past most European countries indulged in "colonialism". We were far from alone. France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Italy not to mention Russia all did the same sort of thing if not worse. And the USA in South America. China and Tibet? Japan's widespread invasions. We just have to accept that times have changed, mostly for the better. |
