Improving bus services would certainly benefit more people but it doesn’t suit the prevailing ‘wisdom’ at TfL, whose board is crammed full of cycling zealots like Julian Bell and Andrew Gilligan. They see it as their duty to re-educate the masses about the joys of cycling, even though clearly the vast majority of Londoners won’t ever use it as their preferred mode of transport. Sadiq Khan has cut bus services, starting well before the pandemic. Ironic considering he always boasts about being the son of a bus driver. Ask most people who commute any distance in London what they would like to see and you’d be told fast, efficient public transport that’s pleasant to use. It’s always been thus. And one of the things that puts regular cyclists off is, surprise, other cyclists getting in their way. |
