"If there is space to have a cycle lane, wouldn't there be space to have a dedicated bus lanes on either side of Chiswick High Road instead? " Not really, recommended width for a bi-directional bike lane is 4m which is the same as a bus lane, so bus lanes in both directions would take up twice as much as the bike lane (recommended figures... in the real world, widths can be narrower...) Two 'with flow' bike lanes would take up more space than a bi-directional lane as both 'with flow' lanes need space for overtaking and there are two sets of kerbing/separation instead of one. As mentioned, you just need to look at historical views of Chiswick High Rd on Google Streetview to see there was never continuous bus lane along the route and it went down to one lane in both directions at three locations. Measures such as a bus gate to give buses priority at junctions always seem to attract howls of complaints as well... |
