No Charlotte. It is not as simple as that. As a walker on pavements I'm surprised you haven't mentioned the number of those that have been and are continually being damaged by cars vans and lorries being driven over them or the number of residents or businesses you pass by who have or have had building work done to their homes and premises but do not hold their builders or themselves responsible for the damage to the pavements so often caused. Damage which can be deadly or life changing to pedestrians causing extra work which our under funded and over-stretched NHS does not need and which we all (or those of us who pay our taxes) fund. That damage also pushes would-be pedestrians into cars and some onto bicycles (there are all sorts of these - see Wheels for Wellbeing) or public transport. There are a number of very vociferous intransigent people who think that the clock can and should stop especially for them. Luckily many others don't feel the same. Ten years ago is a long time - the seriousness of climate change and the damage caused by fossil fuels was not as apparent. |
