Maybe he has the luxury of a lifestyle and income that allows him to do that. Very many people don’t. But pollution comes in many forms. Do you think knocking down buildings and putting up tower blocks is emission free? A lot of particulate emissions come from construction, as well as the damage done to roads and pavements by the lorries delivering or removing material. Sadiq Khan was supposed to introduce a licensing system to make on site plant emission free, but surprise, surprise it hasn’t been enforced. TfL has been very dilatory in changing its bus fleet to zero emission. Another 15 years until that’s done. A slow moving, diesel powered bus, stopping frequently is a major source of pollution, yet no urgency to upgrade the fleet. All so easy to simply say too many cars, when the problem is really too many people needing to get about or needing services. Cycling is fine for some (and the supposed figures supporting the ‘boom’ are suspect to say the least). Things will get worse as more people are crammed into parts of London, since very little supporting infrastructure is going in alongside. But I bet Paul Campbell happily flies off on holidays. Probably not so virtuous as he claims. |
