"The cycling numbers are still tiny" For those using bikes and cars to get to work in London in 2020, those cycling were just over a quarter of those who drive. In Inner London, cyclists outnumbered car drivers & passengers on the commute in late 2020 - about the same as National Rail and not far behind buses and walking. Inner London isn't far - Hammersmith is in Inner London and it includes places like Kensington, Islington, Fulham and Greenwich. "Most commuters want to use reliable, clean and cheap public transport." I agree - and when it comes to buses, it is the volume of traffic that is "making it harder for buses to navigate roads". Cutting the traffic back to 2010 levels is a big challenge which will take several years and involve some big decisions on road allocation, pricing, access to minor roads (which is where 100% of the traffic growth has been), home deliveries and ride hailing services. But high capacity transport, whether that's rail, bus, walking or cycling, will all play their part in the mix. |
