The reason traffic increased was the boom in hone deliveries and taxi services like Uber. Car ownership dropped and continues to drop in London. Cycle lanes are not the infrastructure I’m talking about, though it seems to be all you can comprehend. Schools, shops, leisure facilities, GP surgeries, hospitals, etc, etc. Parts of the capital are barely coping now. Some boroughs are worse than others. Brentford residents have very little in the way of services on their doorstep despite all the building going on there. If things aren’t close then you have no option but to travel. And your assumption that more people will cycle if more lanes are built is flawed. It’s a leisure activity for many, not a transport mode for everyday life. Oh, and the Elizabeth line won’t solve a lot of problems in most of the capital. |
