Careful Charlotte, you’ll have the Lycra brigade choking on their Sunday morning cappuccinos and croissants. The idea that London should become a cycling city is laughable. The size of the place makes it a nonsense. It’s not Oslo or Copenhagen. The demographics don’t work. The employment for many doesn’t work. The cost of bike ownership is too much for a lot of people. The cycling lobby is a tiny minority in powerful positions. Gilligan and Julian Bell on the TfL board. Certain media people. They constantly push a negative message about everything other than cycling. There’s no questioning the orthodoxy, even if the truth proves different. Facts are conveniently ignored, every time. Sadiq Khan isn’t a cyclist. He gets ferried about in a diesel powered 4x4. His grand idea is Vision Zero, to eradicate deaths and serious injuries on London’s roads by 2041. That’s only achievable by banning all wheeled vehicles, including bikes and escooters, but that will never happen. A pipe dream but one pursued at enormous cost to Londoners. |
