"The problem the pro cycling lobby is that they have little man syndrome." There's a lot of little men driving big cars! "It’s a minority activity pursued mainly by white, middle aged men." In the UK that's broadly correct - between 2015 and 2019 men did 2.5 times as many trips and 4 times the mileage as women. More white people than black people cycle, although, by number of trips, the younger you are, the more trips you make for travel, but middle age people cycle more for leisure. In 1990, 50% of women had driving licenses vs 80% of men. Now it is 71% of women and still 80% of men. So these things change and the stereotypes tend to disappear over time. During 2020, the number of trips women cycled increased by 50% and the miles travelled more than doubled - men still did 2 times as many trips, but the gap reduced significantly. With the provision of safe cycling infrastructure there's no reason why the gender gap would persist - there isn't one in the Netherlands for instance. |
