| Ah, the old percentages arguments. Always the sign of desperation. The numbers of cyclists is minute compared to the population of London. Come up with all the percentages you like, but the numbers will always be low. More people will walk than cycle for local trips, particularly if they will be carrying bulky items on the return trip. You don’t need an expensive bike to walk. Most people I know do indeed walk for local journeys where they aren’t either a) returning with a lot of stuff, b) aren’t continuing their journeys on elsewhere or c) are physically capable of doing so. But very little is spent on improving pavements or improving street lighting, particularly in comparison to what’s spent on cycling infrastructure. And ironically those really keen cyclists don’t use the cycle lanes because the less proficient cyclists get in the way and slow them down! Admit it, you just want the roads to yourselves! |
