As I said I don't really want to get bogged down in semantics - it helps nobody. The issue with Waze and other SatNav providers and the ETOs was that they didn't automatically update with the new restrictions. The way they work is that they monitor the traffic flow using the users mobile. When a restriction is in place that is being widely disregarded the system has no way of knowing that its users are at risk of being fined and continues to direct them through the restriction. This continues until Waze/Google updates their maps. All I am suggesting is that local authorities provide this map data to them directly. This would end inadvertent non-compliance by anyone using the app. In return the local authority could be allowed to redesignate the classification of roads so that the algorithm was less likely to divert vehicles down them. This isn't technically difficult to do and would present a win win for technology companies, councils and app users. |
