"Putting the bus stops in line with the main traffic lane achieves a similar advantage. In comparison, waiting to merge when exiting from a bus stop off the main traffic lane just slows their progress" Pity the good doctor neglects the bit about buses idling for shift changes. They sit and block traffic completely while we all wait for the staff to sort themselves out. Not as quick as you'd think. So we see westbound double deckers veering completely into the eastbound lane to pass their idling colleagues. When the bus lane existed, this was rarely, if ever, an issue. Side note: one can never see the westbound buses overtaking as you can't see behind the idling bus, so it always comes as a sudden surprise. It's also super fun to watch as businesses getting deliveries near the bus garage compound this situation. There are plenty of times when traffic in both directions grinds to a complete halt because the combo of light phases and idling buses and business deliveries create the perfect storm. Funny how no cars are the culprits in those instances. At times like that I take solace knowing people are getting the latest stuff from Amazon (you know, when everyone in the household orders separately triggering multiple deliveries to the same address in one day) as well as their meal delivery kits for that evening's supper. |
