So left turning vehicles can move off directly while the bus is at the head of the queue to go straight on. The aim of the bus gate is to prioritise buses, and their needing to merge right from the left lane into the rest of the traffic just negates the advantage the bus gate is able to offer. Putting the bus stops in line with the main traffic lane achieves a similar advantage. In comparison, waiting to merge when exiting from a bus stop off the main traffic lane just slows their progress. |
