You could check with Ealing what 'understanding' they originally had with Mobike, when several designated areas of pavement were marked out with orange tape and set up as 'stacking zones', with the implication that the bikes wouldn't be scattered everywhere. I remember Wandsworth was so unhappy about hundreds of bikes appearing across the Borough that they simply collected them all up and got the company to take them away, and I think Hammersmith asked for them to be removed as well - so something can be done. I'm surprised that nothing can be done about a company that's dumping their lumps of metal all over the place in a manner not much different from fly tipping. There's an interesting parallel with street trading or café licences, where the business has to get permission and even pay a fee for the privilege of occupying the public realm. At least these bike companies could pay a similar fee for carrying out their business in our public spaces. |
