They look to be cheap bikes as well. They very heavy - I moved one that was blocking the pavement in our road - so they are made of cheap steel, not nice alloys. They don't have any gears. You could probably buy a bike of that quality for under well under £150 retail. It's probably costing a company the size of Mobike around £50 per bike to buy them. If they get 50p a time for rental, they only need to hire it out 100 times to get their initial investment back. If it catches on, and each bike gets hired even once per day, they will pay for them in a few months. Given that there are no gears, and I think the tyres are solid so they won't get punctures, they shouldn't have to do a lot of maintenance on them, so the ongoing costs shouldn't be huge. If they are getting stolen and vandalised on a large scale though then the sums won't add up - which would be a pity. |
