Yes of course there are groups you can join and I belong to quite a few (been accused on this forum of 'showing off' when I have mentioned them previously, tough), but that is not the same as informed political discussion being an intrinsic part of family life. When I stayed with penfriends in Tours and Paris as a student I was struck by the informed political debate that the whole family engaged in at (lengthy, plentiful, delicious and very civilised) mealtimes, and both of my penfriends had many student friends who were very focused on politics although that was not their university subject. It is more ingrained in the general culture and in family conversation and the whole way of life, at least in the major towns, than it is here. At least it was then, it is a few years ago now! |
