In terms of the number of children speaking English as a first/second language - there is an issue with the way these things are classified. Children can sometimes be classified as "EAL" (English as an additional language) even if they themselves barely speak their 'mother' tongue (French, Polish, Urdu, whatever)- they get an EAL classification simply because another language is spoken in the home - even if it is just mum and granny chatting to each other. Even if the school has a large % of EAL speakers, you would still hear just as much English in the playground as in any other school. |
