" and also we don't have the same culture of intellectual debate as they do for example in France" Yes we do! There are many groups in London where intelligent debate is very common and rewarded. If you dig around a bit on the internet you can attend several worthwhile events each week from people from all kinds of backgrounds and also become involved with groups of all kinds of different interests that meet in pubs to talk about philosophy or politics. Between the free lectures and groups there is enough happening, in London at least, to feed any intellectual curiosity. Plus we have great newspapers like the Independent and worthwhile news reporting from the BBC and Channel 4 PLUS magazines a plenty like New Scientist the present what is happening at the leading edge of science AND podcasts, blogs and websites AND twitter full of direct access to very smart people. It's the reason why I know I don't know it all - as there is so much I don't know by so many people far smarter in different ways than myself. You want it, it's there. And about experiences - it is down to perspective I'm afraid. "I don't actually believe that most people in this country are either stupid or prejudiced - whether in London or not. " Well all I can say is the most visited newspaper website in the UK is the Daily Mail which time and time again posts inaccurate reports under misleading headlines whilst making lurid comments about women and anything else that'll get collective knees jerking. Most people in the UK are nice people who mean well, but, well, do you watch 'Britain's got Talent?'. |
