Agreed, people are generally ignorant about a lot of stuff because they choose to be, and get overexcited by stories about benefits "cheats" and immigration peddled by the Mail and other publications. One eye opener for me (especially given the recent debate on this forum about pensions), was that increasing state the pension age from 65 to 66 will save £5bn. Job seekers allowance in total costs £4.9bn. Of course creating jobs and a strong business environment is paramount for everyone, being employed is a good thing. But equally, the amount of negative air time afforded to things like JSA is absurd, when benefits such as the state pension are rarely given such treatment. Successive governments have pussy footed around the issue for fear of losing that section of voters, presumably and only recently brought in long overdue measures to increase pension age. |
