They might be wrong about the specific statistics but if their experiences are making them feel these things are out of control - ie they are finding there are fewer jobs, over crowded classrooms where many of the children speak English (in one London school none of the pupils had English as their first language), they can't get into A&E or a doctor's appointment, most of their street appears to be on benefits, then they will believe that there are problems in these areas. Some people might feel this is the price we have to pay to have greater diversity, while others, although the newspaper might be right on saying they are getting the specific stats wrong, may feel they do not want to pay that price and that there are issues that need to be sorted in their locality. The percentages are still quite large if they are focused in some areas rather than spread across the whole country as is probably the case. |
