" There are ways to validate the methods and origins of the figures used. It's how we know Gove used a bunch of PR stories to support some of his changes in education. There are ways to discover things outside of anecdotal evidence. "And so why should he believe government figures and views any more than newspaper figures and views?" Depends on the newspaper. I've known enough Civil Servants and journalists to know I'd side with the Civil Servants. Some newspapers, like the Guardian, have data journalism baked into what they do.
