The point is there is a massive difference between the figures as measured and what the public guess they are across many different areas. You are effectively questioning the figures to apparently justify your views. You're not alone if you read the comments on the various newspaper sites. For many they have years of making unsubstantiated claims behind them supported flat out incorrect stories in many tabloids. This is not sneering, it's just how things play out. You don't need to take a knowledge test to have an opinion on any subject - and the media does drum into us that our opinion matters. My view is uninformed opinions matter far less than informed ones. "If they are just estimates, how accurate are they and do people therefore not have a right to challenge them? " They can by doing their own research, not just throwing opinions around as if they matter more than those who have put some work into finding out what is going on. I think you get the idea of what I'm saying here. |
