"...which leads me to believe that they would do the same as me but are not prepared to admit to it." Ah no. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't. But for myself I wouldn't. And I wouldn't want someone else to torture someone to save my life - and before you start on loved ones again I'm pretty sure my wife wouldn't want me to torture someone to save her life. I wouldn't feel responsible for the deaths that result from my failing to torture by the way, the blame for that lies squarely at the feet of the person who placed the bomb. So I wouldn't feel morally bound to torture. If you are in a room and someone throws a grenade through the window you could save lives by throwing yourself on the bomb, but you don't, are you now responsible for the deaths that result?. Also, according to your hypothesis it makes no sense to stop at waterboarding - if you are morally bound to act to stop the atrocity then you must inflict as much suffering as is necessary to get the info you need. |
