Hypothetical questions that deal with the consequences rather than causes of international conflict provoke questions relating to the thoughts of "the other side". For example, is it reasonable for relatives of innocent Iraqi or Afghani victims of the British/American invasions of their countries to seek retribution in the form of British/American casualties? This is certainly the view promoted by the Israeli government in relation to their own civilian casualties. I would not advocate that response personally as two wrongs do not make a right. However, I regard the view as understandable from this standpoint. |
