I agree those are the crucial questions Ceref. I think most of us are both frightened and also wish to live by moral standards that don't accept what could be described as 'torture'. The danger of calling anyone who doesn't take a hard line attitude an 'idiot' or something else dismissive is that it can open the doors to all kinds of atrocities as the same arguments are used on all sides and there are no constraining forces. The practicalities are often so pressing that the limits may be justifiably breached - but without limits there is a free for all. So I think a legal definition of torture is a crucial starting point. |
