I agree with Jackie. I also think Alastair has raised a key point: the theoretical What Ifs?' are meaningless without being set in a specific context - and the context for the Bush comment is a situation in which 'our side's' use of methods that would be condemned when used by the other side has actually made matters worse by seeming to bolster the views of extremists on the other side. Taking that context into account seems to me to strengthen the arguments against waterboarding as carried out by Bush and could have played a part in killings that did happen. So the 'how do you justify your decision to the bereaved' argument could go both ways. |
