I suspect there are numerous 'hypothetical' situations of this nature, where those doing the interrogating do know that their suspect is in possession of critical information which could save innocent lives e.g. filmed, recorded, caught with explosives. Using the Blair/WMD scenario is inappropriate as we all now know that his Government manipulated the facts to suit it's (his) purpose. It's all very well to take the moral high ground when you are detached from the reality and don't have to risk getting your hands dirty, but what if you do! I'd like to think I would maintain the view that torture is unacceptable under any circumstances, but I believe, faced with having to take such a life or death decision, I would do whatever was needed, and if it did save lives, seek forgiveness for one potential murderer's discomfort (from the grateful public) afterwards. |
