Fascinating. There are some detailed close up photographs linked from there, too, which show very different patterns of damage to the two engines. The starboard looks like it hit lower and wasn't under power, since the fan disk has stopped with only the lower part covered in grass and dirt and no damage to the upper part. The port has broken blades all the way round with dirt everywhere and the inside of the intake is scarred, presumably where the detached blades hit it. This suggests the engine was under power or at least turning fast enough to break the blades all round the disk as the engine dug into the ground. Also, the damage to the flaps as the main undercarriage broke off backwards suggests they were fully down, in the maximum drag position - with the gear down too this is a tricky one to get out of if you lose power - you'll go down like a brick. http://www.heathrowpictures.com/pictures/pictures.html |
