Heathrow is hopelessly inadequate in terms of capacity for the volume of traffic it is attempting to handle. Less busy airports, such as Paris Charles De Gaulle, Amsterdam Schiphol, or Denver International have been designed with 5 or even 6 runways. If we were starting from scratch we would design an airport with the capacity to avoid constant delays with planes continuously stacked and wasting fuel. It would also have the ability to continue to operate normally even when incidents like yesterday's occur. It would need at least 6 runways, and the last place to locate it would be due west of the city. Adding a 3rd runway just makes a bad situation worse, especially as it will increase the projected traffic by 50% over what we have today. |
