"Surely the important point is that this airliner lost power and glided in just making the Heathrow runway" Um, I'm not quite ready to make the mental leap to that conclusion just yet, since it doesn't fit with a large amount of the evidence and is almost entirely conjectural. Let's have a bit of perspective here, it's four hours since the plane came down and none of us are air accident investigators. Anyway, an airliner suffering complete power loss is a good deal more than a one in a million event. At nearly half a million movements a year at LHR that would be a plane into or out of London losing power *completely* once every (bit over) two years. I can't remember one ever, but I do know that that end of Heathrow is a tricky final approach in gusty crosswinds, which happens to be the weather today. |
