If I was a betting man I'd say it was weather related - usually eye witness accounts to events like this turn out to be entirely wrong, and I'd rather wait for someone from the AAIB than an anonymous airport worker talking to the BBC. I drove to Slough and back just before and after the event (in fact I think I might have seen Gordon's 747 taking off on the return trip) and the wind was gusty enough to slam my car doors while I was trying to load it for the return trip. Southerly wind direction too, so across the approach. The east end of Heathrow is notorious for turbulent, gusty approaches just where the hangars are, particularly in cross winds. The poor sod I had the meeting with was supposed to be flying back BA shorthaul to France tonight. He's not had the best of trips, he risked it on Worst Great Western yesterday and had his train cancelled. I advised him to ring Eurostar ASAP! |
