On October 4, 1992 an EL AL 747 freighter crashed in Amsterdam, killing all four people on board and over 50 people on the ground. The cause of the crash was the number 3 and 4 engines separated from the wing, causing a loss of control. The number of fatalities would have been much greater had the El Al Boeing 747 been a passenger plane carrying 400 plus passengers and a larger crew. The number of fatalities on the ground would have been much greater is the aircraft was taking off laden with fuel and if the crash had traken place outside working hours when more people would have been at home. Some years ago a plane, possibly a Boeing 747, tried to land on the A4 near Heathrow and only pulled away at the last minute. Aircraft at Heathrow are also vulnerrable to terrorism because of the size of the perimeter and the poor vetting and security regarding airside workers with access to aircraft. The possibility of terrorists gaining control of airliners in the air is also a real concern.A repetition of a 9/11 disaster over London is a real and present danger. |
