| Lynette, the PC brigade will soon be upon you, so run for cover! I must say I agree with your main point, i.e. basically that charity begins at home. As a foreigner who moved to this country with the intention to find work and contribute to society, or go back where I came from if that wasn't possible, I do feel a bit uneasy at seeing the state lavish help on the lazy, the undeserving, those unwilling to help themselves and sometimes on the downright criminal (of whatever nationality). Having said that, let's also state the obvious: not all foreigners are undeserving, while there are quite a few natives who are. What seems to be at fault is the selection criteria according to which financial and/or practical help is administered. We seem to have become far too generous - but if that's any consolation, ordinary, law-abiding citizens of most other European countries feel exactly the same about their own governments. |
