It is the role of government both local and central to encourage changes in behaviours which will make life better over all. One such behaviour that every political party would agree is positive is getting more people cycling. Therefore it is ridiculous to suggest that any politician who is a member of the London Cycling Campaign is biased or has a vested interest. In the real world of decision making and policy implementation, people don't fall into one of two opposing camps solely representing the interests of their tribe, rather they try and balance the competing interests of everyone for a equitable solution. I see no evidence of the council, TfL or individual councillors trying to form policy based on the more extreme theories that are sometimes articulated by members of this forum. The exception to this would be Andrew Gilligan who, for now, does have a baleful influence on policy but generally schemes are designed by experienced transport officers with the aim of encouraging active travel without resorting to wilfully making it hard to drive in attempt to get people to switch out of their cars. |
